This was a song that Neil Young wrote while touring with the International Harvesters around 1985. The song was about Neil turning 40-years old and his views on the past and what is to come. In the book "Shakey" much of this is talked about and there is a picture in the book of Neil Young with the Harvesters in 1985 on the day of his 40th birthday. Another important fact about this song is that the music is a polished version of "I'm a Man and I Can't Cry(song Neil wrote with the Squires in 1963)," "Casting Me Away From You(a song on that Neil Young wrote from the same tune in 1965 with his friend Comrie Smith)," and then eventually this song turned into "the Emperor of Wyoming(instrumental track on Neil Young's first solo album in 1968)." So, this tune was used in 4 songs and this is the only version of the song that is unreleased today. The first two I mentioned are on the Archives 1 disc-set. This song was originally intended for release during the Old Ways 2 sessions. For those of you who don't know, there was an Old Ways 1 album that was recorded in 1983 with alternate versions of the songs that were re-recorded in 1985 for the Geffen release of Old Ways(also known as Old Ways 2). There are at least 7-10 studio songs recorded for Old Ways 2 and this is one of my favourites. I hope you enjoy it this rarity. As you all know, I own no rights to this song.
